I'm not a IMS specialist.

IMS is a hierarchical database and provide a big performance. 10 years ago it was almost dead but since the last years IBM invest some money to improve IMS among their DB2 product. Seems a lot of large clients still run IMS for some reason and they have some power.

More about IMS is welcome. Just try
